The Premier League certainly returned in style with another weekend of action-packed drama throughout the table. It would be difficult to not start with the biggest and most surprising talking point of the weekend, Tottenham Hotspur’s annihilation of City, ending their 52-game unbeaten run at the Etihad.
Although there’s plenty to be said about the Cityzen’s recent fall from grace but in my opinion, these headlines have only stolen the limelight from a thoroughly brilliant Spurs performance. From their robust defensive display to their clinical finishing, they were simply superb all over the pitch. I can’t lie, I rather enjoyed watching James Maddison net two goals on his birthday along with Brennan Johnson continuing his incredible goalscoring form. The question now is, can Ange’s side finally string together some consistency in the league?
After just about beating Southampton, Liverpool now extend to an eight-point gap at the top of the table. Although there have only been twelve games played so far this season, with City’s downfall and the Gunner’s inconsistency, it’s difficult to picture anyone catching Slot’s men. Is the title race really over in November?
Elsewhere, brilliant Brighton continue to fly high as the Seagulls cling onto an away win against Bournemouth. Bournemouth have been having a pretty decent start to the season themselves but despite the extra man advantage for the last half hour, the Cherries were left sour as they struggled to break through Brighton’s well-drilled defence. Brighton now sit level on points with Arsenal and Chelsea in third and I believe they will be well in the race for European football this season.
On the other end of the table, Wolves, Ipswich and Palace all pick up arguably unexpected points this weekend along with Leicester City parting ways with manager Steve Cooper after losing 2-1 at home to Chelsea.
Wolves were fantastic in their 4-1 victory at Craven Cottage against a Fulham side that have been in great form, making this result somewhat of shock. Ipswich managed to fight against Man United’s ‘new manager bounce’, or rather lack thereof should I say, to gain a valuable point. Ipswich were great and arguable deserved more, but I think this game goes to show, Ruben Amorim has got a long road ahead to drive United back to glory.
Despite a rather disappointing result for Villa against Palace, it has been so nice to have Premier League football back. We’re now approaching the busy December fixture congestion period and if this weekend’s action is anything to go by, we’ll certainly be treated to a festive feast this year.
