What a whirlwind of a transfer window that was. Not necessarily in terms of volume, but with the noise and uncertainty it created around Unai Emery and the squad. Everyone at the club will have been relieved to see the window slam shut last week before players departed for international duty.
Deadline Day Business
Villa completed their summer dealings with three arrivals on deadline day: Victor Lindelöf, Jadon Sancho, and Harvey Elliott.
Victor Lindelöf
The Swedish defender adds valuable depth, both at centre-back — where he can cover England’s first-choice Ezri Konsa — and at right-back for Matty Cash. With vast experience in European competition, Lindelöf’s presence could prove crucial in the dressing room as Villa look to compete on multiple fronts.
Jadon Sancho
Sancho arrives with a point to prove. Fresh off a productive loan spell at Chelsea, where he managed 15 goal contributions across all competitions, the 25-year-old will be eager to re-establish himself as an England international. To put that into perspective: 15 goal contributions would have placed Sancho third in Aston Villa’s squad last season. While some have framed his Chelsea stint as a failure, the reality is the London club wanted him permanently but couldn’t reach a wage agreement. Villa are reportedly covering 80% of his current Manchester United salary, and stylistically he looks a perfect fit. Operating as a replacement for Jacob Ramsey in the left-sided “10” role, Sancho’s close control and ability to retain possession in tight areas could make him a major asset.
Harvey Elliot
The surprise of the window. While Lindelöf was expected and Sancho’s arrival was strongly rumoured, Elliott’s move from Liverpool developed quickly on deadline day. Joining initially on loan with a £35m obligation after 10 appearances, the 20-year-old has already captured the imagination of Villa fans with his energy and personality. Fresh from being named Player of the Tournament at the U21 European Championships, Elliott is pushing for his first senior England cap — and could become the 80th Aston Villa player to achieve that honour.
Europa League Draw
Villa’s return to the Europa League has been met with a favourable draw. The group stage fixtures are as follows:
Bologna (H)
Feyenoord (A)
Go Ahead Eagles (A)
Maccabi Tel Aviv (H)
Young Boys (H)
Basel (A)
Fenerbahçe (A)
Salzburg (H)
On paper, Villa will be strong favourites to secure a top-eight finish. The away trips to Fenerbahçe and Feyenoord will undoubtedly be testing, but with Unai Emery’s European pedigree, confidence will be high that the team can navigate those challenges.
The Road Ahead
After the international break comes a chance to reset and integrate the new arrivals further into Emery’s system. The campaign resumes with a tough trip to Goodison Park to face Everton, marking the beginning of a gruelling run of fixtures.
