Manchester United 2024/25 Performance Review

Most Manchester United fans would agree that the 2024/25 campaign was Manchester United’s worst in the English Premier League era. In other words, it was their worst season in over 30 years of football, despite the club reaching a European final.

United finished in 15th place in the table, closer to the relegation spots than the UEFA Champions League positions. Though Manchester United were never in real danger of going down, Amorim never really got a tune out of his players after taking over from Erik Ten Hag.

Nobody in United red can look back on the 2024/25 season with their head held high, and most Man United fans would be happy to see a complete clear-out in the summer, though Bruno Fernandes might just about get pass marks, given his important goals and many contributions.

But with funds restricted and many want-away stars on huge contracts, the Old Trafford rebuild might take longer than just one window. The futures of Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, and André Onana are all up in the air. These guys must move on before Amorim can reinvest in his squad.

United had the perfect opportunity to salvage something from a disappointing season, but they fluffed their lines in Bilbao and lost the Europa League final to Ange Postecoglou’s underperforming Spurs. United never turned up and failed to lay a glove on Spurs, putting in a desperate performance that summed up their entire season.

Ultimately, Manchester United must improve in all areas in 2025/26. At least they’re starting from rock bottom, and with no European football to distract them, Ruben Amorim can work on getting the basics right, building a new philosophy, and hopefully, for Manchester United fans, getting the club back to winning ways.

Manchester United Transfer News

Ruben Amorim has a monumental rebuild on his hands at Old Trafford. One of his most significant issues is how to sell some of the club’s highest earners who don’t want to be there. Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho are the two biggest issues for Amorim, and he has already instructed them to find new clubs.

The Portuguese head coach has also told Alejandro Garnacho that he doesn’t have a future at Old Trafford, while several other big earners might be shown the door before the summer is over.

As for incomings, United splashed the cash in the 2024/25 season, welcoming Lenny Yoro, Manuel Ugarte, Patrick Dorgu, Joshua Zirkzee, and Matthijs de Ligt in big-money deals. While some of these signings have much potential, none have set the world on fire, with fans still waiting to see the best of them all.

Matheus Cunha is the most exciting summer arrival at Old Trafford, and Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo may join him. However, United have had a couple of bids rejected for the talented forward.

United fans are excited about the prospect of Emi Martínez joining from Aston Villa, though the club will need to sell André Onana first if such a deal is to be sanctioned.

So, we’re a long way from seeing Manchester United’s finished squad for the 2025/26 season, and we can expect a flurry of incoming and outgoing signings before the transfer window closes. Still, here are the main transfers Manchester United have completed so far this season:

Main Incomings

  • Matheus Cunha (Wolverhampton Wanderers)
  • Diego León (Cerro Porteño)

Main Outgoings

  • Victor Lindelöf (Released)
  • Christian Eriksen (Released)
  • Jonny Evans (Retired
