Championship Outright Odds & Markets at Betano

The Championship is often described as the most exciting football league in the world. Any team can win it, and any team can get sucked into a relegation battle. As such, it’s the perfect foundation for outright betting.

At Betano, you can bet on the Championship winner, the teams you think will make the top six, and which player you think will end the season with the most goals.

Join us as we introduce you to the most popular Championship outright markets and show you how to bet on the action at Betano Sportsbook

What is an Outright Bet?

An outright bet is a wager placed on the winner of a specific league, event, tournament, or market. For instance, in the English Championship, you can place an outright bet on the team you think will win the league this season.

By design, an outright wager is part of a long-term betting approach. Rather than picking the individual winners of matches throughout the Championship campaign, you choose the team you think will end the season at the top of the pile.

If your team stays the course and lifts the title in May, you will receive a payout based on your received odds. Though many people place outright bets before a ball is kicked in the summer, you can place an outright Championship wager any time during the season.

English Championship Outright Betting Markets

Let’s take a closer look at some of the Championship outright markets available at Betano Sportsbook:

Championship Winner

The most popular outright market is picking the winner of the Championship. This team gains automatic promotion to the Premier League, and it’s often one of the teams that has recently been relegated from the top division.

Historically, Leicester City are the most successful team, winning the second tier of English football eight times. However, since the establishment of the Championship in 2004, which replaced Division One, no team has won the title more than twice.

Sunderland, Reading, West Bromwich Albion, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Newcastle United, Leicester City, Burnley, and Norwich City have been two-time winners of the Championship since 2004.

Championship Bottom Three

Rather than looking at the top of the tree, you can bet on the bottom of the English Championship and the teams you think will be relegated to League One, the third tier.

Since the start of the Championship in 2004/05, Rotherham United have been relegated to League One five times, and are the league’s perennial yo-yo team.

However, several big, historical clubs have suffered relegation to England’s third tier since the Championship’s launch, including Leicester City (2007/08), Wolverhampton Wanderers (2012-13), Blackburn Rovers (2016-17), Sunderland (2017-18), and Ipswich Town (2018-19).

Championship Promotion

Betting on Championship promotion brings two avenues into play. The first is via the team’s league position, as the top two teams at the end of the season gain automatic promotion to the English Premier League.

However, the teams that finish third, fourth, fifth and sixth also get a shot at Premier League promotion by contesting the post-season playoffs. The winners at Wembley in the richest game in football make it to the top tier.

As we head into the business end of this season, Norwich City, West Bromwich Albion, and Leicester City are the clubs with the most promotions to the Premier League since 1992, winning promotion on five occasions.

Championship Top Six Finish

As mentioned, the teams from third to sixth qualify for the post-season Championship playoffs. This includes a home and away semi-final and the final match at Wembley.

Since the playoff system was introduced in 1987, Crystal Palace have been the most successful team via this promotion route, claiming four playoff wins (1989, 1997, 2004, and 2013).

Championship Top Half Finish

An often-overlooked market in the English Championship is to bet on any team to finish in the top half of the table. This is a good bet if you fancy a team to go well after a promotion from League One, as we regularly see teams effortlessly make the step up and go well in the Championship.

The most recent example was Ipswich Town under Kieran McKenna in the 2023/24 season. The Tractor Boys not only achieved a top-half finish after being promoted from League One but also secured an automatic promotion spot at the end of the campaign.

Championship Top Scorer

Instead of backing any of the league’s teams in outright wagers, you can back the player you think will end the season as the top goalscorer.

Billy Sharp is the all-time Championship top scorer with 130 goals for six clubs. Jordan Rhodes is second with 123 goals, while David Nugent scored 121 goals for five clubs during his Championship career.

Only three players since 2004/05 have broken the 30-goal barrier in the English Championship:

  • 2012/13: Glenn Murray – 30 goals for Crystal Palace
  • 2020/21: Ivan Toney – 31 goals for Brentford
  • 2021/22: Aleksandar Mitrovic – 43 goals for Fulham

The 2024/25 Championship: Outright Betting Tips

We’re in the final stages of the 2024/25 English Championship, and there’s so much to play for at both ends. It’s a straight shoot-out between Leeds United, Sheffield United, and Burnley for those automatic promotion places, and any team can win the title at the time of writing.

Realistically, Watford, Blackburn Rovers, Millwall, Middlesbrough, West Brom, Coventry, and Bristol City are the other teams battling it out for promotion. With four games left to play, they could all secure top-six finishes.

As for the top-scorer race, Norwich City’s Borja Sainz is leading the way with 17 goals, but he’s closely followed by Leeds’ Joel Piroe, who has 15 goals in 42 outings this season.
