Gavin Newsom

Gavin Newsom is the 40th Governor of California, an office he has held since 2019. He’s an outspoken critic of President Donald Trump and has even claimed publicly that he’s worried there won’t even be a 2028 election.

At this early stage, Newsom is the front-runner for the Democratic ticket and could be the main opponent to JD Vance in the 2028 race.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, often called AOC, was the youngest woman ever elected to Congress when she became the US representative for New York’s 14th congressional district.

In many ways, AOC is seen as the anti-Trump, and she could make a bid to become the first female US president as the Democratic Party nominee.

Pete Buttigieg

Another potential candidate from the Democratic camp is Pete Buttigieg. Joe Biden’s Secretary of Transportation, many thought Buttigieg would run for the US Senate in Michigan in 2026, but he’s shelved it in favour of a potential bid for the presidency in 2028.

He most recently served as a fellow at the University of Chicago Institute of Politics.

Josh Shapiro

Josh Shapiro, the 48th Governor of Pennsylvania, is also being mentioned as a potential Democratic presidential nominee.

He survived an arson attack and an assassination attempt at the governor’s mansion in April 2025 and has entered the mainstream in recent times with combative views on Joe Biden’s time in office.
