Though not as competitive as the top leagues in Europe, MLS is evolving, with new teams, top talents, and some of the best stadia in world football ahead of the World Cup, which will arrive Stateside in 2026.

Major League Soccer (MLS) is one of the newest professional football leagues in the world. It was established in 1996 after the success of the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States.
Unlike top European leagues, MLS doesn’t have a promotion or relegation system, and each team within the league is a franchise.
Currently, 30 teams compete in MLS, 27 from the United States and three from Canada. They are split into two conferences – Eastern and Western – as shown below:
Each MLS team plays two games against the other teams in their conference and six games against teams from the other conference. There’s an All-Star Game midway through the season, and a post-season knock-out tournament is contested to determine the winner.
The MLS Cup Playoffs are competed by the top 18 teams, culminating in the MLS Cup odds in early December. Current champions LA Galaxy are the most successful team in MLS history, with six titles.
The Supporters’ Shield is also awarded at the end of the MLS season to the team with the best regular-season record. Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami are the current holders of the Supporters’ Shield.

Lionel Messi mania in 2025 is just as pronounced as David Beckham mania was when the England legend joined LA Galaxy in 2007. The Argentine superstar is the most decorated player in MLS and is second only to Pele in terms of the greatest players ever played professionally in North America.
Messi is joined at Inter Miami by several teammates from the irresistible Barcelona team from around ten years ago, including Sergio Busquets, Luis Suarez, and Jordi Alba. It has “getting the band back together vibes”, and it’s a formula that has worked for Inter Miami, propelling the team into a globally watched franchise and securing impressive results on the pitch.
Outside of Miami, former Liverpool striker Christian Benteke has found form leading the line for DC United. He finished last season as the top scorer in MLS, scoring 23 goals for his team. Dejan Lovelic’s 21 goals propelled LA Galaxy to the title last season, and he’s another to watch this campaign, though he will turn out for Sporting Kansas City this term.
One of the star MLS players across the last three seasons is Luciano Acosta, who regularly appears in the All-Star game. The Argentinian midfielder may not have any international caps to his name, but he has been one of the best players in the league since first arriving in the US in 2017. He has represented DC United and Cincinnati and will play for FC Dallas this season.
