The UEFA Nations League might not draw the same excitement as the European Championships or the World Cup, but it’s a significant European football tournament with a trophy and World Cup qualifying at stake.

So, read on for the lowdown on UEFA Nations League outright betting and learn how to bet on football at Betano.

What is the UEFA Nations League?

UEFA introduced the Nations League in 2018 to replace non-competitive European friendly matches. The tournament organises 55 European teams into leagues and groups, with a promotion and relegation system based on previous performance. This ensures that each team plays group stage matches against teams of a similar standing.

Nations League Format Explained

The Nations League format can seem a little confusing at first glance. Currently, 55 teams are split into four leagues:

  • 16 teams in League A
  • 16 teams in League B
  • 16 teams in League C
  • 7 teams in League D

There are four groups in League A, B, and C, and two in League D. In League A, the top two teams progress to a two-legged quarter-final. The quarter-final winners then advance to the Nations League Finals for an opportunity to win the tournament outright.

The group winners in League B, C, and D are automatically promoted to the league above, while the bottom-placed team is automatically relegated, though no relegation is possible from Group D.

Moreover, four teams will qualify for a play-off to reach the World Cup in 2026. The spots will go to the four best-ranked group winners that don’t automatically qualify for the World Cup via their respective groups.

Nations League Previous Winners

The UEFA Nations League is a relatively new tournament, as its first year was 2018. Three teams have won the UEFA Nations League once: France, Portugal, and Spain.

Portugal won the first Nations League trophy in 2019, beating the Netherlands 1-0 in the final. France defeated Spain 2-1 in the 2021 final, while Spain beat Croatia on penalties to win the Nations League in 2023 at their second time of asking.

The table below shows the results from the first three UEFA Nations League Finals and the teams that finished first to fourth in each tournament:

Year Host Final Result Third-Place Result
2022–23 Netherlands Spain 0-0 Croatia (5-4p) Italy 3-2 Netherlands
2020–21 Italy France 2-1 Spain Italy 2-1 Belgium
2018–19 Portugal Portugal 1-0 Netherlands England 0-0 Switzerland (6-5p)

How to Bet on the Nations League Outright

The 2024-25 UEFA Nations League Final will be held in Germany on Sunday, 8th June 2025. You can bet on the team you think will win the competition in 2025 by placing an outright UEFA Nations League wager.

This simply means that you pick the nation you think will win the final, and if they triumph in Germany, you will win your bet.

Spain are the defending champions and will be joined by previous winner France and Portugal, who have also qualified for the finals. The other team competing is Germany, who qualified for the Nations League Finals as the host. Below are the current odds at Betano for the 2025 UEFA Nations League winner:

  • Spain 9/4*
  • France 5/2*
  • Germany 5/2*
  • Portugal 10/3*

Spain will go into the finals tournament in Germany as the favourites and hope to become the first team in Nations League history to secure back-to-back wins.

At the time of writing, Spain are the second-best team in the world, one place ahead of France in the FIFA world rankings. Portugal are down in seventh, while Germany are tenth. The hosts have underperformed recently and will be looking to get their mojo back ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
