Introduction to the A-League: Teams & Format

The first A-League season kicked off in 2005-06, making Australia’s professional football league one of the newest additions to world football. The AFC confers the league, and 13 teams from Australia and New Zealand compete each season.

As well as the A-League, the teams compete in the Australia Cup, and the winners qualify each season for the AFC Champions League, Asia’s biggest domestic club competition.

The regular season occurs in the Australian summer between October and April. Every team plays 26 games – 12 home and 12 away – and additional “third” matches. Every team also has three byes.

At the end of the regular season, the top six teams progress to the finals. Newly established in 2023-24, there’s also a Unite Round, where all matches are held in Sydney (Allianz Arena and CommBank Stadium).

The A-League finals series runs over four weeks in a playoff format. It culminates in the Grand Final, with the winning team securing the A-League title. As in Major League Soccer in the United States, the A-League has no relegation or promotion system.

Below are the teams that currently compete in the A-League:

  • Adelaide United
  • Auckland FC

  • Macarthur FC
  • Melbourne City

At the end of every A-League season, the regular season winner is awarded the title “Premier,” while the Grand Final winner is dubbed the “Champion.”

The Best Players in the A-League 2025

Englishman Joe Lolley is one of the top players in the A-League right now. The former Nottingham Forest winger plays for Sydney FC and has 22 goals in 62 appearances for the team. He recently signed a two-year extension to extend his stay in the Australian capital.

Lolley’s teammate Douglas Costa is one of the most high-profile stars in the A-League after joining Sydney FC from Fluminense in 2024. The former Brazil international, with 31 caps for his country, played for Bayern Munich, Juventus, and Shakhtar Donetsk and was once considered one of the top wingers in the European game.

Young Australian forward Noah Botic is one of the most exciting young talents in the league after several impressive seasons for Western United. Australia capped him at under-17 and under-23 level, and if he enjoys another healthy goalscoring campaign this season, he will likely earn full honours for his national side.
