Since their Qatari takeover, the mighty and extraordinarily wealthy Paris Saint-Germain have dominated the top French division. In fact, only Lille and Monaco have prevented PSG from winning the title since 2012-13.
Even though PSG dominate at the top end of the table, there’s so much drama in the French league every season, with fierce rivalries, incredibly talented players, and goals galore.

You can expect PSG to begin the Ligue 1 campaign as hot favourites every season. This is because the Parisians have so much more spending power than every other team in the league.
It’s fair to say that PSG are the only French club that can attract the very best players in the world, giving them the edge over their domestic competition.
But before the Qatari takeover of PSG, the capital club had only won the title twice – first in 1985-86 and again in 1993-94. They were the quintessential “sleeping giant” of French football.
Immediately before PSG’s riches, Lyon were the team to beat in France, winning seven consecutive titles between 2001 and 2008 while often going deep into the UEFA Champions League.
Since Montpellier’s unexpected triumph in the 2011-12 season, PSG have won the Ligue 1 title ten times in 12 seasons. Only Monaco in 2016-17 and Lille in 2020-21 have prevented PSG from winning the crown.
So, while there’s lots of action and many different teams have a chance of securing European qualification, it’s fair to say that the Ligue 1 title is PSG’s to lose every season.
If you’re convinced that PSG’s dominance will end sometime soon, you can look to the longer history of Ligue 1 to see that the capital’s wealthiest club was not always successful domestically. Here’s a list of the five most successful teams in Ligue 1 history, with details of each team’s most recent triumph:
Team | Number of titles | Most recent title |
Paris Saint-Germain | 12 | 2023-24 |
Marseille | 10 | 2009-10 |
Saint-Etienne | 10 | 1980-81 |
Monaco | 8 | 2016-17 |
Nantes | 8 | 2000-01 |
As with all major football leagues, you can back any team to win Ligue 1 at the start of the campaign. But given PSG’s recent dominance, it’s not necessarily the best market for this otherwise competitive league.
Here are some of the other betting markets for you to consider, which may offer better value than backing PSG to win the title:
You can back the teams you think will qualify for the UEFA Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League from Ligue 1 rather than backing PSG to win.
For instance, in 2023/24, Brest enjoyed an incredible season, finishing third and securing their first-ever European qualification.
Looking to the other end of the table, you can also bet on which teams you think will be relegated from Ligue 1. 2011-12 winners Montpellier are currently struggling at the foot of the table, while St Etienne are precariously placed in 16th.
One of France’s major clubs could fall into the second tier at the end of this season.
Another popular option with Ligue 1 bettors is the top scorer market. Arguably one of the greatest ever strikers in Ligue 1 history, Kylian Mbappe, left Paris for Madrid in the summer, so he will no longer top the scorer charts.
English forward Mason Greenwood is enjoying a terrific season at Marseille, while PSG’s Ousmane Dembele tops the charts with 16 at the time of writing.
Here's a run-through of the last ten top scorers in Ligue 1, highlighting Mbappe’s recent dominance before his departure to Spain:
Season | Player & goals scored | Club |
2023-24 | Kylian Mbappe (27) | Paris Saint-Germain |
2022-23 | Kylian Mbappe (29) | Paris Saint-Germain |
2021-22 | Kylian Mbappe (28) | Paris Saint-Germain |
2020-21 | Kylian Mbappe (27) | Paris Saint-Germain |
2019-20* | Kylian Mbappe (18) Wissam Ben Yedder (18) | Paris Saint-Germain |
2018-19 | Kylian Mbappe (33) | Paris Saint-Germain |
2017-18 | Edinson Cavani (28) | Paris Saint-Germain |
2016-17 | Edinson Cavani (35) | Paris Saint-Germain |
2015-16 | Alexandre Lacazette (27) | Lyon |
