Did you know Argentina was the first country outside the United Kingdom to establish a football league? The Primera Division is the second-oldest league in the world, contested annually since 1891.
Today, 28 teams usually compete in the Primera Division, which runs from May until December. However, the AFA announced that there would be no relegations at the end of the 2025 season, as they want to increase the league to 30 teams.
Therefore, this is a great league to follow if you get bored during the European off-season, as it kicks off when the major leagues in Europe end.
The Argentinian League underwent a considerable reformation in 2014, simplifying the system. Previously, there were many “products,” including Apertura and Clausura, Inicial and Final, and even a Superfinal.
Today, thankfully, following the Primera Division is much like following the major leagues in Europe, with a few differences you will become familiar with after watching the league for a few game weeks.
When you think of Argentina’s Primera Division, two teams will almost certainly spring to mind – Boca Juniors and River Plate. The biggest teams in Buenos Aries and Argentina’s best-supported clubs, these two South American giants contest a derby known as Superclasico – the biggest football match in the Americas.
River Plate are the most successful team in Primera Division history with 38 titles. Their fierce rivals, River Plate, are three titles behind them, with 35.
But of course, the Primera Division isn’t only contested by two teams. Racing (18 titles), Independiente (16 titles), San Lorenzo (15 titles), and 2024 champions Velez Sarsfield (11 titles) are all huge clubs in South America.
Newell’s Old Boys, Lionel Messi’s boyhood team, are also one of Argentina’s big teams, having won six titles over the years. Though the GOAT is currently plying his trade in Miami, many football purists believe he will return to Newell’s before hanging up his boots, which would undoubtedly raise the profile of the Argentinian league among European fans.
Although Argentina is the current FIFA World Cup champion, its domestic league isn’t as strong as it might be. Most national team players leave the Primera Division to ply their trade in Europe, with Emi Martinez, Enzo Fernandez, and Alexis Mac Allister playing in the English Premier League.
Still, there are many exciting players in the Primera Division. River Plate’s Franco Mastantuono is being touted as the next big thing in Argentinian football, with many European clubs tracking him.
Since breaking into the first team, he has made 33 league appearances, and at the tender age of 17, he has shown what he can do at the elite level of Argentinian football. Given that his contract has a €30,000,000 release clause, he could be destined for Europe sooner rather than later.
Another talented youngster plying his trade in the Primera Division is 22-year-old Cristian Medina, who plays for Estudiantes (LP) after four successful years at Boca Juniors. He was capped at all youth levels for Argentina and represented the team at the 2024 Olympics. A combative central midfielder, Medina will undoubtedly feature for the national team in the coming years.
Argentina fans are also excited at the prospect of Kevin Zenon, who has impressed for Boca Juniors since moving from Union Santa Fe in 2024. The tricky wide player is rumoured to be on the radar of several Premier League clubs and will command a hefty fee if he leaves Boca Juniors in the coming years.
