Introducing PDC World Championship Darts

If you’re new to darts betting, here’s an introduction to everything you need to know about the PDC World Championship:

First introduced in 1994, the PDC’s flagship tournament, the World Championship, has quickly established itself as the premier event in professional darts.

Staged every December and concluding on January 3rd, the PDC World Championship has become a cornerstone of the sporting calendar.

The PDC World Championship stands apart as a unique spectacle, combining the heritage of darts with a modern sense of entertainment.

While players compete in the traditional 501 format, the stage is set against a party-like backdrop, complete with lively walk-ons and a crowd famous for its costumes and electric energy.

The PDC’s mix of top-level competition and crowd-pleasing entertainment has broadened its appeal worldwide, paving the way for international players to rise to the very top.

In this year’s edition, 128 players step up to the oche, each hoping to claim their part of the £5 million prize pool.

Where is the PDC World Championship Held?

Since 2008, the PDC World Championship has been held annually at London’s Alexandra Palace, commencing in December and concluding with the final on January 3rd.

The 2025/26 edition follows the same tradition, running from 11 December through to the new year, with the iconic venue once again welcoming crowds of nearly 3,500 per session.

How is the PDC World Championship Structured?

The upcoming PDC World Championship marks the largest edition in the tournament’s history. Featuring more players, an expanded prize fund, and a tougher path to glory, the Sid Waddell Trophy has never been more fiercely contested.

This year’s field expands to a record of 128 players from across the globe. Forty qualify via the PDC Order of Merit, the sport’s official world rankings, with another 40 securing their place through the ProTour Order of Merit. The final 48 positions are awarded to international and secondary qualifiers.

For the first time in seven years, the 32 seeded players enter from the opening round, following the removal of byes. Seeding ensures that top-ranked competitors are kept apart early on, while players ranked 34 to 64 are drawn against qualifiers, and the rest of the draw is filled at random.

The championship retains its traditional set-play format, with matches growing longer as the competition progresses.

Here’s how the event pans out: best of five sets in the opening rounds, best of seven sets in the third and fourth rounds, best of nine sets in the quarter-finals, best of 11 sets in the semi-finals, and best of 13 sets in the final.

From round two onwards, deciding sets must be won by two clear legs, with a five–five stalemate settled by a single sudden-death leg.

Who Will Win the PDC World Championship?

With the PDC World Championship fast approaching, several names stand out as potential winners to look out for when placing a bet at Betano.

Reigning champion Luke Littler, who made history last year as the youngest ever winner, aged just 17 at the time, enters the tournament as favourite to claim the £1,000,000 top prize.

World number one Luke Humphries also comes into the event in strong form, making him another key player to watch.

The three-time world champion, Michael van Gerwen, still remains a dangerous contender. His vast experience, proven big-stage pedigree, and ability to produce brilliance mean he is certainly in with a chance to claim his fourth world title.

Meanwhile, Josh Rock could be the dark horse of the competition. At just 24, he has already demonstrated his heavy scoring ability on the big stage, and the World Championship may provide the perfect platform for his breakthrough.
