The FA Vase might not be the best-known domestic trophy in the English football pyramid, but it’s a big deal to the non-league teams that compete for glory every season.
After all, in the ninth, tenth, and eleventh tiers of the English game, all players are part-timers or amateurs, playing for the love of the beautiful game and the chance to run out on the hallowed turf at Wembley Stadium in the FA Vase final.
But what exactly is the FA Vase, which teams can qualify, and how can you bet on the action? Join us as we introduce you to the FA Vase and learn how to bet on all levels of the football pyramid at Betano Sportsbook.
The FA Vase is open to teams that compete in levels five to seven of the National League system. In other words, teams in the ninth tier or lower of the entire English football pyramid can qualify and compete in the Vase. The FA Vase final is held at Wembley Stadium in London and is broadcast in the UK on TNT Sports.
Therefore, it’s often a momentous moment in the careers of the part-time and amateur players who get the opportunity to play at the most iconic football stadium in the world.
The FA Vase is similar to the FA Trophy, a knockout tournament for non-league teams in steps one to four of the non-league football pyramid.
The Vase, however, is only open to teams in the lower steps, with teams from the ninth to eleventh tiers of English football eligible to qualify. As such, the Vase comprises approximately 600 teams (including qualifying rounds).
The Northern, Southern, and Isthmian Leagues are the top FA Vase qualification leagues and usually produce the winning team. Teams from regional leagues like the Midland, Combined Counties, and Southern Combination Leagues can also qualify.
The FA Vase is a knockout tournament. All rounds are one-legged affairs until the semi-finals, which are competed over two legs. Then, as mentioned above, the final is held at Wembley Stadium.
While football at this level isn’t all about the money, the prize fund in the FA Vase makes a big difference to the teams that make it to Wembley.
While the £30,000 fee for the winners wouldn’t even pay the weekly wage of a Premier League striker, it’s a massive deal for clubs at this level, who often use the money to fund improvements to their stadium, training ground, or youth facilities.
Below are the details of the prize money given to teams at each stage of the FA Vase:
Round | Winner | Loser |
First round qualifier | £550 | £160 |
Second round qualifier | £725 | £225 |
First round | £825 | £250 |
Second round | £900 | £275 |
Third round | £1,125 | £350 |
Fourth round | £1,875 | £600 |
Fifth round | £2,250 | £725 |
Sixth round | £4,125 | £1,350 |
Semi-final | £5,500 | £1,725 |
Final | £30,000 | £15,000 |
As you can see, if a team enters the FA Vase in the first round and wins the competition, they will win £46,600 in prize money; a considerable amount for teams competing in the lower steps of the non-league football pyramid.
Whitley Bay are the most successful team in FA Vase history. The Seahorses are the only team to have won the Vase four times, three of which came in successive seasons.
The only other teams to have successfully defended their FA Vase crowns are Billericay Town, Tiverton Town, and Halesowen Town, who have all won back-to-back titles.
Hoddesdon Town won the first-ever FA Vase final, defeating Epsom & Ewell 2-1 in the 1975 final at the old Wembley Stadium.
Romford are the current FA Vase champions, following their 3-0 triumph over Great Wakering Rovers at Wembley Stadium in the 2024 final. It was Romford’s first-ever FA Vase final appearance and arguably the club’s most prestigious silverware.
Below are the details of the last ten winners and runners-up of the FA Vase:
