What is the Cheltenham Festival?

Held annually in March at Cheltenham Racecourse in Gloucestershire, England, the Cheltenham Festival features four days of national hunt (jump racing) and attracts elite trainers, jockeys, and horses.

The Cheltenham Gold Cup is the race every trainer & jockey wants to win, but other Grade 1 races like the Champion Hurdle, Queen Mother Champion Chase, and Stayers’ Hurdle also attract an incredible field of runners and riders.

Cheltenham Festival Betting: A Preview of the Championship Races

There are so many exciting subplots and storylines ahead of the 2027 Cheltenham Festival. Will Willie Mullins train another Gold Cup champion? Will Paul Townend ride to victory again? Will we see Inothewayurthinkin or Gaelic Warrior romp home to another impressive win?

Join us as we preview the championship races at the 2027 Cheltenham Festival and discover some insights ahead of the first major racing festival on the calendar:

The Champion Hurdle 2027

Run over two miles and a half a furlong, the Champion Hurdle is the feature race on Champion Day of the Cheltenham Festival. Lossiemouth was dubbed “Queen of Cheltenham” after winning the race in 2026 with Paul Townend on board for Willie Mullins.

She’s one of the favourites to win again in 2027, alongside Mydaddypaddy, The New Lion, and King Rasko Grey.

The Queen Mother Champion Steeple Chase 2027

Il Etait Temps won the 2026 Queen Mother Champion Chase in 2026, which was the third win for Willie Mullins on the second day of the festival. Heavily fancied pre-race favourite Majborough jumped poorly and was never really in it, and Il Etait Temps steadied himself after a late mistake to win.

Alongside Il Etait Temps, Kopek Des Bordes, Majborough, Kargese, and Dinoblue are among the ante-post favourites for the 2027 Champion Chase.

The (Ryanair) Steeple Chase 2027

After defending champion Fact to File was ruled out late in the day due to the firm ground conditions, Heart Wood stepped up to win, finishing ahead of the much-fancied Jonbon and Banbridge, who finished second and third, respectively.

If Fact to File returns in 2027, he’ll be among the favourites alongside Heart Wood, Lulamba, and The Jukebox Man.

The Stayers’ Hurdle 2027

Run on the New Course at Cheltenham, the Stayers’ Hurdle is a Grade 1 National Hunt race and the leading hurdle event on the calendar with a £325,000 purse.

The 2026 race produced one of the shocks of the festival as 33/1 shot Home by The Lee won for JP O’Brien under JJ Slevin. Ballyburn went well and finished second, while Teahupoo, going off at 9/4, could only finish sixth.

The New Lion, Jasmin De Vaux, and Wodhooh look promising ahead of the 2027 Stayers’ Hurdle at Cheltenham.

The Gold Cup Steeple Chase 2027

Cheltenham loves a returning champion, and all eyes will be on Gaelic Warrior in the lead-up to the 2027 Gold Cup. It was a resounding triumph for the horse and jockey Paul Townend, who finished eight lengths clear of Jango Baie in second.

These two will likely feature heavily in the ante-post betting ahead of the 2027 Gold Cup, while Fact to File, Final Demand, and Kitzbuhel may also go well.
